Appropriate Technologies
Africa Harvest’s strategy is to deliver proven technologies to local farmers to enable them to (1) meet the urgent and immediate need of feeding their families and communities, and (2) increase their incomes by the selling excess produce.
Africa Harvest is involved in the following technologies:
Tissue Culture
It’s a simple form of biotechnology that allows healthy new plants to be generated from minute amounts of plant tissues. This technique dramatically speeds the multiplication process for vegetatively propagated crops like banana.
Virus indexing
A procedure to test plant stock to determine if it has a virus.
Biofortification using Genetic Modification (GM) technology
This is the manipulation of the genetic material of an organism to produce desired traits, such as nutritional quality. Biofortification is the process of increasing the nutritional content of the edible portion of plant foods to levels that consistently exceed the average content. This can be done either through conventional selective breeding, or through the GM technology.
